1. Life can be rough
2. Hanging tough when the going gets rough
a. Rough times are times of "refining" growth.  Jas 1:2-4
  • "Testing" makkes something stronger

  • "Endurance" means to last longer

  • Three important responses:
    Consider it joy - to be grateful
    Realize that trials work to your advantage.  God wants to teach you something.
    Let God's will be done in your trials.

b. Rough times are times to rely on God. Jas 1:5

  • God will give us wisdom to know why.

  • God will give us faith to go on.

  • God will give us grace to lift us up.  

c. Rough times are times fo reward.  Jas 1:12

  • A reward for passing.

  • A reward for lasting.

3. Trust is the Key to hanging tough.

1. Forget the past and concentrate on the opportunities and responsibilities ahead.  1:1-2
2. Live by God's promises as stated in His Word.  1:3-6
a. Successful conquest.
b. God's continual presence
c. Acceptance from people
3. Meditate and obey God's Word. 1:7-9
4. Press forward in courage and faith. 1:10-11

Deuteronomy 1:9-18
1. Leadership is a burden which should be shared by more than one pereson.  1:9-13; Num 11:1-15; 2Tim 2:2; Gal 6:2
  • People can be a big burden:
    They like to complain and grumble. Exo 16:1-15; Exo 17
    They don't listen to clear instructions. Exo 16:16-24,25-31
    They are prone to rebel.  Num 14:1-4; 16:1-3

2. Leadership should be shared by qualified, godly people.  1:13-15; Num 11:16-17; Acts 6:3; 1Tim 3:1-3; Titus 2:5-9
3.  Leadership should involve delegation of responsibilities.  1:16-18; Exo 18:17-23; Acts 6:3-4; Eph 4:11-13; 1Cor 12

2.  What did He say? Acknowledge His Law & Obey His Word (1:5,8)
3.  Whom did He say it to? His covenant people, His chosen people (5:1-3; 7:7-8)
4.  Where did He say it? In the desert of wilderness, on the border of Canaan (8:1-2; 1:1,5)
5.  When did He say it? In their weakness & in their victories. (1:2,4)
6.  Why did He say it? To magnify Himself as God of history, blessings, & holiness. (6:4; 10:12;12:2; Exo 6:8; Lev 10:3)
