Introduction: The spirit of Christmas:
To Scrooge, it is a ghost;
To a boy, it is a gift of a pair of pants; C.K. Chesterton says, "More important to have the pair of legs on which the pants fit";
To God through Paul, it is "giving" and God does not like a stingy or a begrudging giver.
I. Through the prototype of a generous giver - 2 Cor. 9:13-15
II. Through the promise of God - 2 Cor. 9:11-12
III. Through the principle of sowing and reaping - 2 Cor. 9:6-10; cf. Psa. 112:3, 9

What does Christ's birth mean for us today?
Christ's birth signifies 3 things:
I. God is still in control even at the height of evil's power - Luke 2:1-7; Dan 4:17; Rev 17:14
II. God identifies with us through Christ's humble birth - Luke 2:7-20; Phil 2:5-11; Heb 4:14-16
III. God provides salvation for all peoples through His Son - Luke 2:13-20; Matt 1:20-23; 1Cor 15:1-8
How should we respond to the message of Christ's birth?

Background: There are 4 qualities that are necessary to maintain unity
I. Humility
A. Humility is seeing yourself modestly.
B. Christ is our example - Phil 2:6f
II. Meekness
A. Meekness is not weakness but strength under control
B. Who is a good example of a meek person?
III. Patience
A. Patience is used here of not retaliating when you are hurt by another.
B. God has shown us a lot of patience, so we should show patience towards others. - Rom 2:4
IV. Bearing with one another in love
A. Bearing with one another involves putting up with other people's weaknesses.
B. Love is the basic attitude of seeking the highest good of others.
