I. God often allows His servants to be tested "in the wilderness"
  • Examples of God's servants encountering wilderness experience

  • We are tempted in times of physical and emotional exhaustion

  • We are tempted by Satan in the areas of strengths

II. The devil tempts us in 3 crucial areas

  • i) Physical needs and desires (Mt.4:1-4; 1 Jn.2:16; Gen.3:6)

  • ii) Possessions and power   (Mt.4:5-7; 1 Jn.2:16; Gen.3:6)

  • iii) Pride   (Mt.4:8-11; 1 Jn.2:16; Gen.3:5-6)

III. How to overcome temptation
Renew our minds with God's Word   (Rom.12:2; 2 Cor.10:4-5)

  • Memorize God's Word   (Psa.119:11; Phil.4:8)

  • Meditate on God's Word   (Josh.1:8; Psa.1:2)

  • Obey His Word   (Psa.119:9, 33-34; Josh.1:8)

Introduction : Moses briefs the children of Israel concerning the perils of the good life. He believes that to be forewarned is to be forearmed.

I. Why does God allow perils in the believer's good life? Deut. 8:1-3
a. He tests you to help you to know what is in your heart.  Deut. 8:1-2; cf. Exo.15:25; Deut. 8:16; 13:3; 33:8
b. He teaches you that man does not live by bread alone.  Deut. 8:3; cf. Mt. 4:4

II. What are the perils in the believer's good life? Deut.7:1-9:6
a. From external sources.  Deut.7:1-5; cf. Eph. 6:12; Col.1:12-13
b. From internal sources.  Deut. 8:14; 9:4-6

  • Self sufficiency, Deut.8:14, 18; cf. Deut.6:12; 28:47; Prov30:9; Hos.13:6
  • Self righteousness, Deut.9:4; cf. Deut. 8:17; Rom.11:6, 20; 1 Cor.4:4, 7

2. Hanging tough when the going gets rough
a. Rough times are times of "refining" growth.  Jas 1:2-4
  • "Testing" makes something stronger

  • "Endurance" means to last longer

  • Three important responses:
    Consider it joy - to be grateful
    Realize that trials work to your advantage.  God wants to teach you something.
    Let God's will be done in your trials.

b. Rough times are times to rely on God. Jas 1:5

  • God will give us wisdom to know why.

  • God will give us faith to go on.

  • God will give us grace to lift us up.  

c. Rough times are times for reward.  Jas 1:12

  • A reward for passing.

  • A reward for lasting.

3. Trust is the Key to hanging tough.
